A homeowner in Chelmsford bought their first EV and wanted a 7kW wallbox charger fitted in the rear of the driveway, away from the road. The challenge: the supply cable needed to come from the meter cupboard at the side of the house, across the full length of a block-paved driveway, without leaving the surface looking patched.
We took the call from the EV charger installer and handled the civils, ducting and pull while they handled the wallbox itself.
What the job involved
- Driveway block paving lifted in two clean sections, kept on pallets.
- 12m of duct laid with sand bedding and warning tape.
- Single-phase 16mm² sub-main pulled, terminated at the meter end and tail-out for the EV installer.
- Block paving re-laid in original pattern with kiln-dried sand reset and a power-wash finish.
- Charger commissioning visit booked in for the day after.
Key challenges
- One block had been cut on installation — sourced a matching replacement from the supplier.
- Customer had outdoor furniture mid-driveway — temporary repositioning agreed without damaging the cover.
- Adjoining property's drainage gully had to be carefully avoided on the run.
Outcome
- Driveway looked untouched after re-laying — no patchwork scars or off-pattern blocks.
- Wallbox installer commissioned the charger the next day without issue.
- Customer referred two neighbours within the month.
I was worried it'd look like a builder's job afterwards. You genuinely cannot tell where they lifted the paving. Wife was happier than she was about the car.
